What Is a Digital Twin? Bringing Your Facility Out of the Dark and Into the Cloud

Imagine walking into your facility and instantly knowing the "heartbeat" of every machine — even the ones hidden in a locked mechanical room. No clipboards, no guessing which pump is about to fail, no digging through folders for a service manual. That's the promise of a digital twin: a live, cloud-based clone of your physical operation.

Your facility, organized in the cloud

At its core, a digital twin is an interactive map of your business, organized in a simple hierarchy:

  • Locations — buildings, plants or properties ("Main Factory," "Cold Storage Warehouse").
  • Zones — rooms or areas, tagged by climate (indoor, outdoor, refrigerated, hazardous).
  • Assets — the actual equipment inside: HVAC units, pumps, generators, freezers.

With that map, you attach virtual sensors to real machines, log maintenance history and track costs in one hub.

Connected or standalone — your choice

You don't need high-tech hardware on day one.

Connected mode (the "self-driving" machine)

Pair an asset with MaxLinc wireless sensors (temperature, current, pressure). The system runs a calibration period tailored to the equipment — for example 14 days for a freezer, 21 for an HVAC unit, 30 for a boiler — to learn what "normal" looks like. After that, it continuously scores the machine's health from 0–100%. As a pump vibrates more or draws more power, the badge shifts from green (healthy) to orange (warning) to red (critical), giving you early warning before a breakdown.

Standalone mode (the digital logbook)

No sensors yet? Use the twin as an asset & maintenance tracker: store serial and model numbers, log technician names, parts and repair costs to see which machines bleed money, and keep photo galleries so your team always knows where everything is.

Three features that change the game

  • Interactive 2D & 360° photo views: upload real photos of your rooms and pin live sensors directly onto them — a status map, not a boring database.
  • Shared maintenance calendar: schedule cleanings and inspections; the system emails the team a week, three days and the day before, then rolls forward automatically.
  • Granular access sharing: give a contractor Viewer, Editor, Service & Maintenance or Silent Viewer rights — exactly what they need, nothing more.

From firefighting to foresight

A digital twin moves you from reactive firefighting to proactive management — less downtime, longer asset life, one shared source of truth. It also feeds predictive maintenance and powers the augmented-reality views in MaxLinc Vista. Explore MaxLinc Vista to see your twin in 3D, or choose a logger to map your first asset.
